Named after the abundant crops that grow here and the 9th governor of Oklahoma, Alfalfa County is the gateway to some of the richest history and best outdoor activities in NW Oklahoma. You'll find welcome wagons and adventure in our communities settled around the county's main attraction, Salt Plains State Park, once a favorite hunting ground for the Osage Nation. Later owned by the Cherokee Nation, Alfalfa County was placed in the Cherokee Outlet and officially established in 1907 as a result of the Cherokee Strip Land Run. Today, our tiny neck of the woods remains the only Alfalfa County in the world and the only place on earth where visitors can dig for selenite crystals, plus discover so many more one-of-a-kind gems, like Selenite Sam, the best places to pick sandplums, and the stories behind our homesteaders' barn quilts.
